BLM
Black Lives Matter. It's time for action.
Silence is not an option.
We have to say his name.
George Floyd was the latest in a long list of human beings who were victims of a culture of white supremacy. We are outraged by his murder and the continued violent response by police against protesters. It is time to stand together against marginalization and repression because of skin color and not just declare our support on social media, but be among the people seeking justice. We are all able to support the Black Lives Matter movement no matter where we are in the world.
Protest
There are demonstrations that are peaceful and so socially distanced that you don't need to leave your front yard. Check out what is happening in your city and get involved. If you are in the US, see if there is a BLM chapter nearby.
Donate
Funds are used to support George Floyd's family, bail out protesters, and support the wider BLM movement. Donate to BLM, ACLU, the Official George Floyd Memorial Fund, or find other organizations that speak to you.
Speak Up
Amplify Black voices on social media and call out racism when you see it. You can start by following the three bad ass founders of the BLM movement, who are all women (by the way). Patrisse Khan-Cullors @osopepatrisse | Alicia Garza @chasinggarza | Opal Tometi @opalayo
Learn
If you aren't Black, actively get some more awareness of the anti-racist struggle. Read the news, follow spokespeople of color on social media, or watch a documentary about race. Just don't ask your Black friends to explain it to you unless they offer.
Sign a Petition
is till open even though the officers have been charged. Make your voice heard and get on their email list for more ways to help with your signature. Also contact local officials to fight for your city's rights for peaceful protests.
Check in
Ask your Black friends, classmates, co-workers, and fellow travelers how they are doing. They are almost certainly not ok right now. Listen and accept that if you are not Black, you will not understand. Holding space for them goes a long way.
